The Thrill of the Chase: Unraveling Why Readers Like Mystery Books

By Mackenzie Harrison

Mystery books typically center around crime, theft, a conspiracy theory, or trying to unleash the truth about a certain event. There are usually twists and turns, tense situations, and nail-biting scenes that cause you not to want to put the book down. Mystery books have been popular since the early 19th century and are still incredibly popular today. The question is – why? Below, we’ll dive into why readers enjoy reading mystery books.

The Thrill

The unknowns, the twists and turns, and the suspense keep the reader’s attention. The anticipation of what’s going to happen next usually makes it difficult to put the book down. Readers just want to understand and will continue to stay engaged until they get the full picture of a book. They want to know why the mysterious plot happened, who did it, and what’s going to happen next.

Escapism

Fiction books, let alone mystery books, give the reader a chance to leave the real world for a little bit to escape and forget their real problems, even if it’s just for a little while. They can explore a new world, new characters, and new settings full of heart-racing adventure, crime, and danger.

Exercise Critical And Analytical Thinking

Mysteries give readers a chance to solve puzzles or riddles, identify certain patterns, piece information together, and utilize their creative and analytical thinking skills to solve the ultimate mystery.

Emotional Connection To The Characters

When reading about characters, their past, their trials and tribulations, their emotions, etc., the reader will develop an emotional connection to the character and certain situations in the book. You’ll begin rooting for them and crave justice for the character.

Curiosity

It’s human nature to become curious and want to know the truth behind a situation. The more secrets, lies, and clues that drop throughout the book, the more the reader will want to learn the truth. It’ll make uncovering the secrets at the end much more rewarding and will satisfy the reader’s curiosity.

A Sense Of Accomplishment

Throughout the book, it’s natural to become invested in the characters, the storyline, and to want justice for the character in the end. You’ll likely come up with predictions, guesses, and projections about what happened and how the book will end. If your predictions were correct, you may feel proud of yourself or accomplished for solving the mystery.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, mystery books have a way of taking the reader on an adventure that keeps them on the edge of their seat. They allow the reader to buckle up and explore a once-in-a-lifetime experience full of danger and dark situations from the safety and comfort of their own home. Mystery books have been around for a long time, and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere anytime soon – thank goodness!
