How To Create Chemistry On The Page As A Romance Writer

By Mackenzie Harrison

The chemistry between characters is essential to consider when writing a romance book. When the connection is sparking between characters, the readers will be able to feel it. The chemistry between characters will make the story more believable and really grab the attention of your reader. Your readers will begin to root for this couple when they sense the chemistry and connection between the characters. When there isn’t much chemistry there, it can make the interactions between the characters seem stale, and the reader may become uninterested in the story altogether. This is why building chemistry between your characters is important. If you’re not sure how, below, we discuss a few tips that will help create that electric spark between your characters that you’re looking for.

Craft Individual Characters

When writing a story, it’s important that you take the time to carefully craft individual characters. Your characters should have a unique personality, physical features, values, goals, fears, etc. The reader should be able to get to know the characters and understand what motivates them.

Establish A Connection

When the characters meet, make sure to throw in why they are attracted to each other. You should include a few reasons why they are so drawn to each other, such as physical traits, common interests, shared experiences, etc. Digging into these kinds of layers will help make your book seem more believable.

Develop A Reason For Them To Be Together

It’s important that you find a reason for your couple to want to be together. There needs to be a reason why they can’t, essentially, live without the other. They will face difficult times, but they need a solid reason why they can’t part ways.

Throw In A Conflict

Make sure you add a conflict to your story. Conflict helps the reader to see how deep the characters’ love goes. Against all odds, whether it’s a fight between the two or an inner battle within one of the characters, they’ll be able to overcome the conflict together.

Don’t Forget Character Development

As your characters go through challenges and special moments together, make sure their relationship not only grows, but they grow as individuals. Your readers will love to see how much their relationship has blossomed and evolved throughout the story and how they’ve grown as people.

In Conclusion

While creating chemistry between characters as a romance writer can be stressful, it doesn’t have to be. With these tips, you’ll be able to craft organic chemistry between characters more easily.
