The Emotional Side Of Publishing A Book

By Mackenzie Harrison

When publishing a book, most authors think of the logistical side of the process as opposed to the emotional side. However, publishing a book can bring emotions that many authors may not expect. Below, we’ll dive into the emotional side of publishing a book.

Let’s begin!

The Grief After Completing A Book

This may sound strange to think that you would experience grief when finishing a book, but some authors experience this emotion. Just think, authors spend months, sometimes even years, constantly working and thinking about their book. They immerse themselves in the world they are creating, and when the time comes for them to finish it, it can be slightly depressing.

As an author, it can feel like you’re saying “goodbye” to this part of your life. But when one door closes, another will open. A new project and part of your life will begin.

The Joy And The Nervousness Of Sharing Your Work

You’ve put countless hours, hard work, and dedication into your book, and finally being able to share it with the world is incredibly exciting. You worked tirelessly creating storylines, proofreading, designing, and writing, and finally getting to the finish line and seeing people enjoy your work is thrilling. However, it can also be nerve-wracking. You may start asking yourself, “What if they don’t like my story?” “What if people don’t see my vision for the book?” Putting your work out there is brave, and it’ll make you feel vulnerable. However, everyone will form their own opinion about your book. All you can do is put your best work out into the world and be proud of yourself with the book you made.

Anxiety From Anticipation

After you publish your book, you may experience anxiety due to anticipation of how your book is doing. You’ll likely stare at sales numbers, refresh your social media accounts and reviews page, and pace your office during the waiting period after your book is released.

Imposter Syndrome

When your book is finally published, it can be unreal to finally be considered a published author. Having that title is something you should be proud to have. However, it can also bring feelings of imposter syndrome. This feeling is common amongst authors. They often wonder if they deserve the title or if they’re good enough as a writer to be considered an author.

It’s important that you don’t let those thoughts bring you down. You should wear the title of author proudly.

The Pride You’ll Feel Reading Good Reviews

There’s no better feeling than to read a good review from a reader who truly loved or connected with your book. Seeing comments from someone who enjoyed your book, something you worked incredibly hard to create, is a truly amazing feeling.

In Conclusion

In the end, there’s an emotional side of publishing a book that many people may not realize. An author may feel anxious, pride, imposter syndrome, joy, excitement, etc., and that’s perfectly okay! Publishing a book isn’t easy, and it’s okay to let yourself feel all of the emotions during the process.
