The Reason Why Good Books Still Get Ignored

By Mackenzie Harrison

When your book just hasn’t taken off yet, it’s easy to blame the quality of your book. Don’t knock how good your book is because chances are, your book is incredible, and it not taking off yet has nothing to do with the quality of your book.

Every year, beautifully written books don’t reach the volume of people they could; meanwhile, some books with more flaws reach a broader audience. Why is that? It has more to do with visibility than quality. Readers just haven’t come across it yet.

Below, we’ll dive into why good books still get ignored and tips to prevent this.

Your Book Is Competing Before It’s Even Opened

It may be hard to believe, but your book is competing against other books before a reader even cracks open your book. Your book is competing with other books in the genre, book covers, the title, and the blurb. It’s not uncommon for readers to pick up a book, see the cover, and then compare it to the book next to it. They will see the title, read the blurb, and compare both. The one that stands out to them the most will likely land in their cart. Your book needs an eye-catching cover, a powerful title, and a well-written and memorable blurb. If it’s not checking all of these boxes, that could be the culprit as to why your book isn’t flying off the shelf just yet.

Marketing Isn’t A Priority

Let’s face it, marketing isn’t the most glamorous part of being an author. Most authors dislike marketing their book because it feels awkward, and they don’t want the experience to feel too salesy. They may also not like that talking about their book feels like they are bragging. Instead, they don’t market their book. However, it’s important to keep in mind that if you don’t promote your book and tell people about it, they won’t know it exists. You have to put your book on the map.

People aren’t ignoring your book because of its lack of quality; they truly just don’t know about it.

Poor Timing

Timing when releasing a book is everything. Releasing during a time when many other bigger books are being released or during a busy season can end up burying your book. Timing can reflect the visibility of your book. Do some research and try to set your release date at a time when things aren’t as busy, and there aren’t any big planned releases around that time.

Final Thoughts

In the end, just because a book is amazing doesn’t mean it’s an exception to getting ignored. Good books still get ignored, but there are things you can do to get more visibility. Plan out your release date timing, make promoting your book a priority, and ensure your book cover and blurb are at the top of their game.
